South Lediken, Old Rayne: A redundant farmhouse at South Lediken has been restored and extended to create a modern, comfortable and sustainable home. The design aspires to unite the existing rural architecture with new contemporary additions. A long spine corridor with a glazed end connects to the old building to the new and many of the original features, such as doors, skirtings, architraves and fireplaces, were retained. Two extensions have been made to the original structure: a new double height glazed building at the gable end and a smaller extension to the rear, the design of which was based on the existing wash house 'lean too', a typical feature of many Aberdeenshire farmhouses. The extension and garage create a sheltered courtyard with covered walkways leading to the house and garden. A ground source heat pump has been installed in the dwelling and workd efficiently with the open fires and wood burning stoves. The work was carried out using natural and locally sourced materials. The dry stone exterior walls are clad with Scottish larch and much of the existing granite was re-used. South Lediken was shortlisted for the Aberdeenshire Design Awards 2008.
