South Lediken, Old Rayne
A farmhouse which had lain unused for forty years has been restored and extended to create a modern, sustainable home. The design unites existing rural architecture with new contemporary additions. A long spine corridor with a glazed end connects the old building to the new, and many of the original features, such as doors, skirtings, architraves and fireplaces, were retained and reused. A new double height glazed extension, heated by a wood burning stove, was added at the gable end. The design of the smaller extension to the rear was based on the existing wash house “lean too”, a feature typical of many Aberdeenshire farmhouses.
